Why Communication Matters

Presented by Henrita Oosthuizen, a highly qualified counsellor with an extensive background in counselling and psychotherapy, this lecture explores the vital role that communication plays in fostering healthy relationships. With qualifications including a Masters in Counselling, Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Integrated Psychotherapy, and certifications in Christian Counselling, Henrita brings a wealth of knowledge and a holistic approach to her practice. She integrates psychological, biological, social, and spiritual perspectives, ensuring that each client’s unique needs are met through tailored counselling strategies.

Henrita will draw on her expertise in multiple therapeutic frameworks, such as Family Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, Non-Violent Communication, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Through these approaches, she will highlight the ways in which effective communication can reduce conflict and strengthen emotional bonds in relationships. Henrita’s work is grounded in the research of leading psychologists, including John Gottman’s "Four Horsemen" of relationship breakdown and Maggie Dent’s research on adolescent communication’s role in preventing emotional and sexual abuse.

This session will delve into the neuroscience behind how our brains respond during communication, the impact of emotional intelligence in relationships, and the practical steps to resolve conflicts through compassionate and kind exchanges. Henrita will also examine the role of trust and communication in preventing emotional harm, referencing Biblical wisdom in order to emphasise the importance of speaking words that uplift and foster connection.

By the end of this OPD webinar, participants will be inspired to apply these insights and strategies to build stronger, more compassionate relationships, both personally and professionally, enhancing their understanding of how communication is at the heart of human connection and emotional well-being.
